Fight for Survival
Todd, who was 28 at the time, actively resisted the crocodile by pushing it, throwing punches, and using his dog for defense. This harrowing adventure took place at a creek in Trunding near Weipa on the Cape York Peninsula, where Todd fought for his life for over half an hour.
He was fishing and had just prepared for the evening at the mangroves. In a recounting of this horrific incident on SBS Insight, Todd shared:
"I got out of the car, found a clearing, put the beer on the ground, took the bait off the fishing rod, and took two steps - and then - bam!"
"Something grabbed me from behind my left leg. My first thought: I thought someone had jumped in to scare me, but when I looked down, I saw it was an 11-foot-long crocodile hanging on my leg."
The predator tried to pull Todd into the creek while he clung helplessly to the mangroves. Todd attempted to free himself by even stabbing the crocodile in the eyes and trying to open its jaws.
The longer he fought, the more injuries he sustained.
"The crocodile had grabbed me by the left leg, and I thought: 'I'm in trouble.'
In another deadly twist, Todd broke his right leg and tore off one of his toes.
"Then I really thought: 'Damn it, I'm going to die here.' I started screaming: 'Help! Crocodile! Help! Crocodile!'"
At this point, Todd was already waist-deep in water and continued to hold onto the mangroves.
Thanks to a Friend and Quick Help
Eventually, a friend heard his screams from the nearest pub. A woman who had gone out to smoke from the 'Albatross Pub' saw the struggle from afar and rushed to help.
Among the friends who arrived was miner Kevin Beaven.
"Where is the crocodile?"
Todd responded:
"It's on my damn legs!"
Finally, the crocodile released him when Kevin found a stick and began hitting it on the head.
"He pulled me out, dragged me to the shore,"- Todd recalled.
Todd was immediately taken to the hospital in Cairns to undergo a series of surgeries due to severely infected crocodile bites. After a few weeks, the attacking crocodile was captured and identified.
