Money-Saving Tips for Baking

According to The Sun: On Tuesday, Channel 4 kicks off 'The Great British Bake Off', and this year the contestants will try to gather without unnecessary expenses.

Even baking at home can be quite expensive, as the cost of ingredients and equipment quickly adds up.

Here are a few tips on how to save on baking:

  • BUY IN BULK: Stick to recipes with similar key ingredients to avoid unnecessary spending.
  • Sophia Butler, who runs a mobile tea room, noted: 'Ready-made mixes ultimately cost more than buying sugar, flour, eggs, and margarine, so save money by buying budget options.'
  • SIMPLE THE PROCESS: You don't need the fanciest gadgets like the chefs from Bake Off.
  • Sophia said: 'All you really need is a handheld electric mixer and a plastic bowl. They are easier to store and clean.'
  • SUBSTITUTE AND SAVE: Due to rising prices for butter and sugar, Reshmi Bennett from Anges De Sucre bakery suggested her Hero Sponge recipe:
    • Preheat the oven to 150°C.
    • In a bowl, place three medium eggs.
    • Add 80g sunflower or vegetable oil, 120g low-fat natural yogurt, 100g milk, and 20g vanilla extract.
    • Whisk until smooth, then add 300g granulated sugar and 5g salt.
    • Whisk until combined.
    • Sift 350g plain flour and 15g baking powder.
    • Mix until smooth. Grease two eight-inch cake pans and evenly distribute the batter.
    • Bake on the middle shelf for 27-29 minutes.
    • When a wooden skewer inserted in the center comes out clean, remove from the oven and cool.
  • USE LEFTOVERS: Reshmi also offers ideas on how to use leftovers.
  • 'Leftover cake can be used to make French toast or baked to create cakes for tea. Crumbs from the dough can be frozen and used in desserts.'
