Recognition of Palestine

According to The Sun: French President Emmanuel Macron recognized Palestine during a speech at the UN meeting held the day after a similar address by the leader of the UK Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer.

France joined a growing number of countries that have officially recognized the Palestinian state. This happened during the UN global summit in New York, almost two years after the war in Gaza began.

In addition to France, the UK, Canada, Portugal, and Australia also recognized Palestine on Sunday, receiving criticism from Israel.

“We must do everything in our power to preserve the possibility of two states: Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security,”
Macron noted at the beginning of the three-hour session at the UN.
“Recognition of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people takes nothing away from the rights of the Israeli people,”
he added, receiving prolonged applause from the audience.

Macron also outlined the concept of a “renewed Palestinian administration,” under which France is willing to open its embassy, taking into account such factors as reforms, a ceasefire, and the release of all hostages captured by Hamas in Gaza.

This step was characterized as “historic and bold” by the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which expressed gratitude for the decision made. However, despite the symbolic significance of the event for Palestinians, it is unlikely to lead to real changes in the region.

Israel, which is currently led by the most right-wing government in its history, has declared that there will be no Palestinian state, continuing its fight against the armed group Hamas in Gaza.

Israel's assault on Gaza has been ongoing since October 7, 2023, following an attack that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths. According to local medical services, more than 65,000 Palestinians have fallen victim to this conflict.

In recent weeks, Israel has begun a planned ground operation in Gaza, and the chances for a ceasefire remain low.

The recognition of Palestine by various states indicates a growing international support for Palestinian aspirations. However, as shown by Israel's reaction and the continuation of the conflict, this will likely prove to be merely a symbolic gesture, while stability in the region remains under threat. It is now important to monitor the developments, as these decisions may influence further international relations and the dynamics of the conflict.
