Tragedy Strikes in the Philippines

According to TSN.ua: A 51-year-old food vlogger, Emma Amit, died in a Puerto Princesa, Palawan hospital on February 6th after consuming a toxic crab. The incident has prompted Philippine authorities to issue an urgent public warning. Just two days earlier, on February 4th, Amit had posted a video of herself preparing and eating a crab identified as a Zosimus aeneus species.

Following her meal, Amit lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital. An investigation at her home later uncovered the shells of seven Zosimus aeneus crabs, a species notorious for its dangerous toxins. Poisoning from this crab carries a mortality rate that can reach 50%. While Zosimus aeneus is common across the Indo-Pacific region, local officials are now strongly urging residents to avoid consuming this crustacean entirely.

A Call for Increased Caution

This tragedy involving dangerous seafood has caused significant concern within the community, with experts emphasizing the critical need for caution when consuming crabs that may contain poisonous substances. Foraging for wild food carries inherent risks, and proper species identification is essential.

This incident underscores the importance of caution when selecting seafood, especially in regions where toxic species are prevalent. – Local Authorities

Given the high fatality rate associated with such poisonings, local authorities are actively working on public education campaigns to prevent similar incidents in the future. It is vital for consumers to be aware of the potential risks linked to consuming wild-caught seafood and to adhere to expert guidance in this field.
