400-year-old pub closes permanently: reason – closure of access to aerodrome.
Closure of the historical pub
According to The Sun: The four hundred years of existence of the Three Compasses pub in Alfold has come to an end due to the closure of vital access to the aerodrome. The owners announced its closure this week.
Google MapsOn Facebook, the owners stated:
“With great sadness we have to announce that our last day of operation will be this Sunday, 28 September.”
They also noted:
“The last few months have been very hard for us at Three Compasses. Due to the closure of the compass gates, our business has suffered a huge decline, and we can no longer survive financially.”
The owners expressed hope for understanding from the clients, noting:
“This decision took a long time, as we love meeting our local customers and are very grateful to everyone who supported us.”
Local residents, including the councillor, were shocked by the news of the closure.
A multitude of comments appeared on Facebook, where people expressed their dismay. One commentator wrote:
“Never in my life have I wanted someone to succeed as much as you, because you poured your soul into everything you do.”
Another user added:
“We made some fantastic memories with you. Your food is wonderful.”
Another commentator noted:
“You tried immensely to keep the pub going, but unfortunately, various obstacles stood in the way.”
Councillor Jeremy Hunt also expressed his feelings through social media, stating:
“Very sad to hear about the closure of Three Compasses in Alfold.”
He added that this closure came after the shutting down of other pubs in the region:
“This closure occurred on the heels of the closures of Wheatsheaf in Bramley and Dog and Pheasant in Brucy.”
Three Compasses was located near Dunsfold Aerodrome and had been a community staple in Alfold for over 400 years.
The pub was situated on one of the oldest routes in the region – the Sussex Turnpike, which connects Guildford to Newbridge. This road was laid out as far back as 1757.
The pub was popular among visitors, having received over 100 reviews on TripAdvisor. People noted that they serve
“a wonderful Sunday roast”, while others said it is a
“little gem”.
The main entrance to the aerodrome closed in January 2024 as part of the Dunsfold Park redevelopment plan, approved in 2018, which includes the construction of 1800 houses.
A new approach to the aerodrome was opened on Canada Avenue last year, but now passing customers cannot see the pub, as the new route goes through Dunsfold Rd, near the former Compass Gate entrance.
The closure of Three Compasses has sparked widespread resonance among local residents, who recall the warm memories and happy moments spent in this historical pub. As a community hub, Three Compasses not only offered delicious food but was also a place for gatherings and socializing. Its closure marks the end of an important chapter in the history of Alfold.
