EU Commissioner Kubilius: Security guarantees for Ukraine threaten only Putin's regime.
Security guarantees for Ukraine: a threat to Putin's regime
According to FREEДOM: EU Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius believes that security guarantees for Ukraine and potential NATO and EU membership do not threaten Russia, but its main problem lies in the resilience of Putin's regime. He expressed this opinion during the ceremonies in Brussels dedicated to the 34th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.
'Today it is quite clear that Putin and Lavrov (the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, - ed.) fear your independence and the security guarantees that Western leaders are ready to provide for your independence. Today we have a great opportunity to ask why the Kremlin is so afraid of Western security guarantees for Ukraine. My answer is very simple: it complicates Putin's planning of new aggression against Ukraine. The reality of Russia is that Putin believes that his regime may become unstable if Ukraine becomes more secure and can develop its economic and social achievements through European integration,' - said the Commissioner.
Kubilius promised that the European Union will support Ukraine.
'Security guarantees for Ukraine will pave the way for the future success of the country. The greatest threats to Russia's future come only from Putin's regime itself, not from NATO, not from Ukraine, and not from its success. The European Union stands together with you, alongside Ukraine, protecting your independence and helping you achieve success through Ukraine's European integration, similar to the achievements of the Baltic and Central European countries. And we will continue to support the defense of your independence and the creation of your success,' - noted Kubilius.
Andrius Kubilius emphasized the importance of Ukraine's contribution to European security.
'Your independence and your success are the most important guarantee of security for all of us, for all of Europe. So you do not need to thank us for our support, as you do here, but we need to say loudly to you again and again: 'Thank you'. Thank you very much for what you are doing to protect us all,' - concluded the Commissioner.
Thus, the ceremonies in Brussels became an important step in strengthening the partnership between Ukraine and the European Union, as well as demonstrating the EU's support in ensuring Ukraine's security and independence.
