Japanese Study on Virtual Soccer Finds Sparkling Water Boosts Focus.
How Carbonated Water Affects Concentration and Fatigue During Gameplay
According to TSN.ua: Scientists from Japan's University of Tsukuba have discovered that drinking sparkling water can enhance concentration and reduce feelings of fatigue during virtual soccer matches. Their findings, published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior Reports, highlight a growing scientific interest in how beverages affect mental performance in our increasingly digital world. This research adds to the ongoing exploration of simple, non-pharmacological ways to maintain cognitive sharpness during extended screen time.
Experimental Details
The experiment involved 14 virtual soccer players who each consumed 500 ml of sparkling water chilled to 4°C. Over a three-hour session, researchers measured participants' pupil size and heart rate. The results indicated that sparkling water significantly lowered subjective fatigue and increased the players' enjoyment of the game.
The study authors noted that 'sparkling water could serve as a low-risk and sustainable alternative to caffeine and sugar for reducing cognitive fatigue in modern digital life.'
They further emphasized that, compared to plain water, the carbonated version was significantly better at reducing subjective fatigue, boosting enjoyment, preserving cognitive function, and preventing pupil constriction. These outcomes suggest new possibilities for enhancing performance and comfort during virtual reality gaming sessions.
This research could have important implications for the video game industry and developers aiming to improve user experience. The demonstrated effect of sparkling water on cognitive functions might encourage beverage manufacturers to create new products designed to support players' physical and mental well-being. As interest in healthy lifestyles and performance optimization within gaming continues to rise, discoveries like this could form the basis for further investigation in the field.
