Drinking Water Quality in Kyiv: Status and Preparedness for Possible Contamination

The chief sanitary doctor of Kyiv, Serhiy Chumak, spoke about the quality of drinking water in Kyiv and how the water utility is preparing for possible contamination.

He announced this during a press conference at the Ukraine-Ukrinform media center, reports "Khvylya".

Chumak assured that the quality of water in the centralized water supply of the capital is still within the norm according to all indicators. The center monitors the quality of tap water and surface water bodies.

"Centralized water supply meets both sanitary-chemical and bacteriological standards in all indicators," emphasized the chief sanitary doctor of the capital.

In surface water bodies, minor deviations are observed - elevated levels of manganese. However, Chumak emphasized that this is a natural situation for these collection points.

He explained that similarly high temperatures were observed during the same season in previous years, according to past records.

In addition, Chumak noted that to date, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has not received any complaints about deteriorating drinking water quality and poisonings.

According to the general director of "Kyivvodokanal", Oleh Lysiuk, the company is ready for any developments.

"When deciding on how to eliminate odors, we consulted with colleagues from Berlin and Hamburg water utilities, as well as the Marzeev Institute. Activated carbon is very effective in combating odors and also positively impacts water treatment... We reached out to international partners, UNICEF helped us (find activated carbon - ed.). Now we will be fully supplied with it," he said.

Kyivvodokanal has already created and tested a dosing unit for the use of activated carbon. It is planned to create a 1% mixture of activated carbon with water. This mixture will be introduced into a specific point of water treatment, which will be chosen after experiments to achieve the best effect. Activated carbon should remain in the water for at least 20 minutes before disinfection and coagulation processes begin.

"This will happen at the water intake, and then the raw water facilities (pulp - ed.) will be supplied to the pumping station for water treatment," added Lysiuk.

Water supply in Kyiv is under control, and no complaints about drinking water quality or poisonings have been recorded. In addition, the company is ready for any situation and has plans to ensure clean water for the capital's residents.
