Google Launches Orbital AI Data Centers: How This Will Change the Future.
According to Korrespondent.net: Google has introduced a new large-scale initiative called Project Suncatcher. Its goal is to create a network of orbital artificial intelligence data centers that will operate on solar energy. According to Tom's Hardware, the plan is to launch a constellation of satellites equipped with special Google processors for processing AI queries. These satellites will be able to exchange data via optical communication channels.
Thus, the company aims to reduce the load on terrestrial power grids and ensure uninterrupted power supply to its systems, as there is significantly more solar energy in orbit than on the surface of the Earth.
Advantages of Sun-Synchronous Orbit
According to data from Google Research, the satellites are planned to be placed in a sun-synchronous orbit of the 'dawn-dusk' type. This trajectory runs along the boundary of day and night, allowing the satellites to receive almost constant illumination. This will increase energy generation by up to eight times compared to traditional terrestrial solar panels.
Challenges and Issues
Among the main challenges for the development of artificial intelligence infrastructure is the lack of electricity. For example, Microsoft has had to postpone the launch of part of its servers due to energy constraints. The rapid growth in electricity consumption in data centers has already led to higher electricity rates for the public in the USA.
Despite the promising concept, Google realizes that serious technical difficulties lie ahead for implementation. The company needs to create a wireless data transmission channel between satellites with ultra-high bandwidth, properly coordinate the movement of a large number of satellites to avoid collisions, ensure radiation resistance of processors in space conditions, as well as reduce the costs of launching and maintaining the orbital infrastructure.
The company's plans include launching two prototypes in 2027 to test the system and assess its effectiveness for machine learning.
It is worth noting that earlier Google announced an investment of $15 billion in an artificial intelligence center in India.
In addition to significant environmental benefits, Project Suncatcher could become an important step towards the development of artificial intelligence technologies that can impact various aspects of life.
