The Minister of Natural Resources of Greenland, Naaja Nathanielsen, warned that Donald Trump's proposal to buy Arctic territory could have 'devastating consequences' for the presentation of its minerals to international investors.

The minister stated that the rhetoric of the newly elected US president, including his refusal to rule out the use of force to seize the island, risks damaging Greenland's image as a stable, resource-rich democracy.

'When he talked about not ruling out military use in Greenland, I was very concerned about how investors would perceive Greenland, possibly as a democracy that is on the verge of becoming unstable or being seized. That would be devastating for our mineral resource sector because investors do not like instability,' Nathanielsen said.

Some mining companies have approached the island's government for assurances that their licenses will remain valid 'if Greenland is occupied by the US,' said a person familiar with the matter.

However, Nathanielsen said she believes it is the wrong way to interpret the words of the new US president.

'If you set aside the rhetoric, I hear that Trump believes Greenland's natural resources should be utilized. And we completely agree with him on that,' she added.
