According to The Sun: Dreaming of a job on a Mediterranean resort in summer may seem ideal, but for many young Brits it turns into a real nightmare.

Experienced former workers point out that behind the attractive images of life on the resort that can be seen on social media, there are many dark sides.

These warnings sound against the backdrop of a crisis in the industry, as recent reports indicate a significant decrease in the number of Brits heading to work in islands like Mallorca.

Meanwhile, last year the Home Office already warned that teenagers traveling to Europe for the season risk becoming victims of exploitation as they receive low wages and are forced to work in horrific conditions.

Traumatic memories

Stunning testimonies from former workers confirm this information. They share that they had to sleep on mattresses and loungers in overcrowded apartments where cockroaches had taken over, and they were often forced to return home due to financial difficulties.

Kate Goldstone from the border agency says: “We know that working abroad is often advertised as prestigious, but in reality young people face risks of exploitation.”

“The people we talk to at the airport always mention acquaintances who had bad experiences, but think it won't happen to them.”

Ruby, who worked as a rep in Zante, noted: “Thanks to my appearance, I was able to get a job, but it severely limited my opportunities.”

Broken rules

She recalls witnessing violence during a wild party: “My friend got into trouble, sustained serious injuries, and I had to decide whether to go to work or stay home due to shock.”

Ruby and other girls working in the bar emphasize that there was a constant campaign aimed at attracting young women, which limited their opportunities. “It felt like your appearance was being used to force you to work more.”

Ruby paid €300 a month for a small room with two girls.

Living conditions

Even during free time, the situation did not improve, as housing in Zante was hard to come by. One girl experienced physical violence, but the police were not called.

Ruby noted: “I arrived without any warnings about possible problems. I just wanted to give it a try.”

“We were offered small rooms, and eventually someone had to sleep on the floor due to lack of space.”

“People rented apartments to tourists, so we had to choose only the worst conditions.”

Low wages

Girls are often hired for party work only because of their appearance.

Chloe Redpath, a 20-year-old resident of Newcastle, also sought a job and noted that the promised help from the company might have been a myth.

“A salary of 5 euros per hour did not allow for a normal life. To buy dinner, I had to work six hours.”

“It's not at all what it was advertised as.”

“They make you work seven days a week.”

Unpleasant living conditions

Emily Poulsen

Emily, a 25-year-old girl, described her 'clean' living space as neglected and dirty.

“When we arrived, the place was filled with cockroaches, and the bathroom was in terrible condition, clogged with dirt.”

“What was promised did not match reality at all.”

Emily also noted that they had no windows, and the beds were placed simply in the kitchen without air conditioning.

Communication with employers

Several girls who worked in Ibiza shared that clubs often asked about their clothing size and relationship status.

“Questions about partners should not be part of the hiring process,” one of them stated.

Experts emphasize that young women can become victims of abuses due to such questions.

“They make you do things you shouldn't have to.”

Sexual harassment

Recalling events from 2018, a worker from Magaluf shared that she often encountered harassment from clients.

“One man offered me money for sex,” she noted, questioning her work experience.

“I stayed because I was outraged by the way I was treated.”

These testimonies indicate that working conditions may be completely different from what was expected, so it is important to be cautious for those planning to work at resorts.
