Chinese Initiative Friends of Peace: Why its Calls Do Not Address the Aggressor

According to inkorr.com: The 'Friends of Peace' initiative, launched by China and Brazil, is actively working towards resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Its aim is to find a political solution to the situation in the eastern part of the country.

Spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, emphasized that 'Friends of Peace' calls for all parties to the conflict to cease hostilities and create conditions for establishing peace in the region, as reported by Ukrinform.

However, the question of a direct appeal from 'Friends of Peace' to Russia to stop the war remains open. Mao Ning did not specify to whom exactly their calls are addressed, reiterating only general statements about the constructive role of the group.

She also noted that since its inception, the 'Friends of Peace' initiative has played an important role in the political settlement of the conflict and will continue this work, striving to achieve peace in Ukraine.

Criticism of the 'Friends of Peace' Initiative and the Ukrainian Position

The 'Friends of Peace' platform was created in September 2024 during the UN General Assembly. It unites countries of the Global South that support the approaches of China and Brazil in resolving the conflict. However, critics note that the group often puts the aggressor and the victim on the same level, making neutral appeals to all parties to the conflict.

The Ukrainian government has repeatedly stated its readiness for a fair resolution of the situation based on international law but faces the necessity of repelling Russian aggression due to Moscow's constant refusals to stop military actions.

Thus, the 'Friends of Peace' initiative, established in September 2024 under the auspices of China and Brazil, continues its efforts to seek ways for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Despite criticism for neutral appeals and the lack of clear addressees, Ukraine remains committed to a fair resolution of the situation in accordance with international norms.
