UN Chief Reaffirms Support for Ukraine's Sovereignty on War's Fourth Anniversary.
UN Secretary-General's Remarks on Ukraine
According to UATV: Marking four years since Russia's full-scale invasion, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has reiterated the United Nations' firm stance on upholding Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized that the war, a violation of international law, has inflicted immense suffering on Ukraine, including widespread destruction of infrastructure, attacks on civilians, and severe human rights abuses.
'For four years, since the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation in breach of international law and the UN Charter, Ukraine has endured devastating losses and displacement, repeated attacks on its civilian population and critical energy infrastructure, and grave human rights violations, including against children', António Guterres
Guterres also highlighted the critical importance of the humanitarian assistance that UN personnel have provided to Ukraine throughout the conflict. This support remains vital as the war continues to displace millions and strain essential services.
The Status of Crimea and Donbas
The Secretary-General stressed that Crimea and Donbas are Ukrainian territories, rejecting any notion of a right to self-determination for these regions. 'I vividly recall my visits to Ukraine, where I witnessed firsthand the destruction caused by this war. That is why I welcome all efforts aimed at achieving a just and inclusive peace', he added.
These statements reinforce the UN's consistent position of supporting Ukraine against aggression and the urgent need to restore peace. The UN's stance reflects broader international law, which does not recognize territorial acquisition by force.
The UN chief's comments underscore the international community's backing for Ukraine's fight to preserve its sovereignty, a crucial element of global security policy. Support from the UN and other international bodies is pivotal in coordinating humanitarian aid and planning for post-conflict recovery. Furthermore, such high-level statements help keep the crisis on the global agenda, potentially galvanizing further diplomatic efforts to find a path to a sustainable peace.
