This significant shift in foreign policy made the United Kingdom one of over 150 countries that have recognized Palestine.

Canada, Australia, and Portugal also supported the United Kingdom's decision, while France is expected to make a similar move soon.

Sir Keir called it 'a promise to the Palestinian and Israeli peoples that a better future is possible.'

Conflict and Humanitarian Situation

This decision came after nearly two years of war during which Hamas terrorists killed around 1,200 people and took hundreds more hostage.

A senior Hamas member, Mahmoud Mardoun, mentioned that the recognition is 'a victory for the rights of Palestinians and the justice of our cause,' adding that it will send a 'clear signal' to Israel.

Israel's actions during the conflict have come under increasing criticism as the humanitarian situation in Gaza becomes more dire.

The UN Commission stated last week that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The Israeli government firmly denies these allegations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply criticized the UK's decision to recognize Palestine, calling it 'a reward for terrorism.'

“I have a clear message for those leaders who recognize the Palestinian state in the aftermath of the horrific mass murder on October 7. You are granting a huge reward to terrorism.”

“And I have one more message for you. It will not happen. There will be no Palestinian state west of the Jordan.”

Donald Trump also spoke in support of Netanyahu, reiterating his view that recognizing Palestine is a misguided step.

What Does Recognition of Palestine Mean?

The recognition of Palestine by the United Kingdom signifies diplomatic acknowledgment of the state.

The UK had previously promised to recognize a Palestinian state within a peace process with Israel, but the timelines remained unclear.

This decision does not mean that the UK no longer recognizes Israel, with which it has maintained diplomatic relations since the 1950s.

However, now Palestine is formally included in the list of states recognized by the United Kingdom, meaning its representative receives ambassadorial rank.

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has persisted for many years, and it remains unclear what the borders of a Palestinian state will be.

The West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem are often described as occupied Palestinian territories.

However, Israel actually controls a significant portion of this territory, developing settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Control of Palestinian territories is divided, with Hamas fully controlling only the Gaza Strip.

On Sunday evening, Netanyahu also expressed the opinion that this decision is 'a reward for Hamas.'

He stated: “I don't think they should celebrate this. Frankly, I am not in that camp.”

Sir Keir promised in July to recognize a Palestinian state this month if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire and does not make commitments towards a peace process.

The Prime Minister assured that recognizing Palestine 'is not a reward for Hamas.'

He described Hamas as a 'brutal terrorist' organization and stressed that they 'cannot have any future' in governing Gaza.

“We recognized the State of Israel over 75 years ago as the homeland of the Jewish people. Today we join over 150 countries that also recognize the Palestinian state.”

“This is a promise to the Palestinian and Israeli peoples that a better future is possible.”

The leadership of British Jews also expressed dissatisfaction with this decision, noting that it caused 'deep outrage' in the Jewish community.

The recognition of Palestine by the United Kingdom is an important milestone in the global political context, as more countries are moving away from previous approaches. This decision creates new challenges and opportunities on the international stage, as well as for the resumption of the peace process in the Middle East.

The security situation and humanitarian crisis in the region remain tense, and the further actions of world leaders could significantly impact the future developments. It is vital to monitor the reactions of other countries and organizations, which could change the dynamics in the region.
