Cocoa Content in Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate
According to The Sun: Chocolate lovers may be interested to know that some of their favorite brands contain half as much cocoa as their competitors. For example, the UK market leader, Cadbury Dairy Milk, has only 20% cocoa powder, which is significantly lower than brands like Nestle, Galaxy, and Terry’s.
According to the Food Standards Agency classification, milk chocolate must contain at least 25% cocoa and 14% milk. If the milk content exceeds 20%, the cocoa content can be lower, and such chocolate is referred to as “family milk chocolate” or “chocolate with a high milk content.”
All major milk chocolate brands in the UK have a higher percentage of cocoa than Cadbury Dairy Milk, which sells more than 350 million bars annually. For instance, the Hotel Chocolat Milk Chocolate bar contains 40% cocoa, Lindt Lindor chocolate contains 31%, and Nestle Crunch contains 29% cocoa.
Comparison with Competitors
Market leader Cadbury Dairy Milk ranks last among cheaper alternatives, with the Dairyfine dark chocolate bar from Aldi containing 55% cocoa.
Chocolate expert Jennifer Earle told The Sun on Sunday: “The price of cocoa is three to four times more expensive than it was two years ago. “Generally, confectionery contains far too little cocoa to be considered proper chocolate by my standards. It is classed as chocolate because legal requirements in the UK are so low.”
A Cadbury representative noted: “Cadbury Dairy Milk is the best-selling milk chocolate in the UK, and its creamy, chocolatey taste has ensured its popularity since its creation in 1905.”
