India's Military to Deploy U.S. V-BAT Drones, Influenced by Their Proven Performance in Ukraine.
India's Acquisition of V-BAT Drones
According to UATV: Following their effective combat deployment in Ukraine, India has moved to purchase American V-BAT reconnaissance drones for its army. A key factor in this decision was the drones' demonstrated resilience against electronic warfare systems. The deal was formalized in the autumn of 2024 with the announcement of a joint venture between India's JSW Group and the U.S. firm Shield AI, which will oversee the domestic production of these drones.
Technical Specifications of the V-BAT Drone
The V-BAT drone has a maximum payload capacity of 18.1 kg and a mass of 73 kg. It is capable of flight durations exceeding 12 hours, enabling extended reconnaissance missions. With an operational range of 180 km, it serves as an effective tool for intelligence gathering over significant distances. Sargjan Shah highlighted a crucial advantage, noting that
"the V-BAT's ability to operate without runways"greatly expands its utility across diverse operational environments.
Construction of the factory for V-BAT production in India commenced in December 2023. This initiative is part of a broader strategic effort by India to modernize its military and reduce reliance on foreign arms imports. The move reflects a growing global trend where nations are closely observing battlefield performance in Ukraine to inform their own defense procurement. The joint venture aims to equip the Indian army with advanced technology while fostering the growth of the country's domestic defense-industrial base.
The procurement and planned local manufacturing of the V-BAT drones underscore India's strategic approach to upgrading its armed forces. This initiative is designed not only to enhance the technological capabilities of its military but also to stimulate local industry, particularly within the defense sector. Amid global instability, India is actively seeking to lessen its dependence on external suppliers and ensure its forces are equipped with modern combat systems.
