Trump Proposes Economic Incentives for Russia

U.S. President Donald Trump, who just four weeks ago threatened Russian President with increased economic sanctions if a deal to end the war in Ukraine was not reached, is now offering economic incentives for Moscow.

This sharp shift in policy raises serious concerns, as easing sanctions pressure may strengthen the Kremlin's position without gaining significant concessions from it, writes Foreign Policy.

Experts warn that such an approach could undermine allies' trust and not lead to long-term peace in the region. Many believe that economic rapprochement with Russia without prior guarantees of cessation of aggression and restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity could be seen as encouragement of the Kremlin’s aggressive policy.

Furthermore, easing sanctions could negatively impact the international reputation of the U.S., demonstrating inconsistency in foreign policy and a willingness to make concessions without visible benefits. This could lead to increased tension in relations with European partners and undermine efforts at collective deterrence of Russian aggression.

Instead, analysts recommend maintaining a tough line towards Moscow, linking any easing of sanctions to specific and verified actions by Russia regarding reducing conflict and respecting the sovereignty of neighboring states. Only such an approach, in their opinion, can ensure sustainable peace and stability in the region.
