Iran Blocks Strait of Hormuz After U.S. Violates Memorandum: What You Need to Know.
Situation in the Strait of Hormuz
According to Espreso.tv: Iranian news agency TasnimNews reported that the United States breached a memorandum on ending hostilities, prompting Iran to block the Strait of Hormuz. This development follows a June 15 agreement between the U.S. and Iran to cease combat operations and reopen this vital waterway. Two days later, on June 18, Presidents Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize those commitments.
However, by June 19, Iran had closed the Strait of Hormuz, raising alarm in Washington. That same day, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance announced he would not travel to Switzerland for the official signing ceremony—a move that underscores mounting tensions between the two nations. In response to what it called a breach of trust by the U.S., the Iranian news agency TasnimNews stated:
'This is the first step in response to the enemy's violation of trust.'
Diplomatic Talks and Fallout
Meanwhile, Vice President Vance denied claims that the Strait of Hormuz had been shut down, asserting: 'I see no evidence that the Strait of Hormuz is closed.' He also added that 'the ceasefire will be upheld,' signaling efforts to manage the situation despite the escalation.
On June 20, U.S. President’s envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Switzerland for negotiations with Iranian representatives. This move indicates Washington’s intent to maintain dialogue, even as differences and tensions persist between the two countries.
Blocking the Strait of Hormuz could have severe repercussions for global oil markets, as this waterway is critical for shipping crude from the Persian Gulf. Should the conflict intensify further, it might drive up oil prices and destabilize the regional economy. Both the U.S. and Iran continue to express willingness to engage in diplomacy, but the situation remains volatile and warrants close monitoring of future developments.
