According to Espreso.tv: Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to grant Ukraine a license for the domestic production of Patriot missiles, a process that could span several years. This move came in response to an urgent letter sent by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Trump in late May, which highlighted a severe shortage of air defense systems in Ukraine. Amid ongoing military hostilities and relentless Russian assaults, this initiative could represent a pivotal step in bolstering the nation's defensive capabilities.

On July 6, Russia launched 419 attack munitions, including 23 Iskander-M ballistic missiles. These strikes resulted in 19 fatalities and dozens of injuries. Since the start of the year, Russia has deployed 553 ballistic munitions, of which approximately 160—or 29%—were intercepted. Under such relentless pressure, Ukraine urgently needs to reinforce its air defense systems.

Missile Production and International Collaboration

The United States produces an estimated 600 to 650 Patriot interceptor missiles annually. A single Patriot battery costs around $1.1 billion, with $400 million allocated for the battery itself and $690 million for the interceptor missiles. Ukraine currently operates at least seven Patriot batteries, but these are insufficient to provide comprehensive protection against missile attacks.

Since Trump's announcement on July 8 regarding the potential transfer of Patriot missile production rights to Ukraine, Ukrainian officials have expressed hope that this will pave the way for increased manufacturing output and enhanced defense capabilities. President Zelensky commented on the decision, stating that

“The U.S. has essentially recognized Ukraine as ready to produce Patriots.”

Additionally, Europe is advancing Project Freya, a pan-European missile defense system involving Ukraine, Germany, France, Norway, and Sweden. The first successful interception of an enemy ballistic missile using the new Freya system could occur by the end of 2026, underscoring the importance of international security collaboration.
