Kremlin's Territorial Claims Exaggerated: ISW Reports Russia Seized 572, Not 900, Square Kilometers.
Institute for the Study of War Frontline Assessment
According to UATV: In its latest battlefield report, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has directly challenged the Kremlin's claims about captured Ukrainian territory. The think tank states that Russia has seized only 572 square kilometers this year, not the 900 square kilometers Moscow has asserted. Such inflated claims are a common feature of Russian information warfare.
Despite the Kremlin's announcement of capturing 900 square kilometers of Ukrainian land since the start of the year, the actual figures are substantially lower. For instance, in Konstantynivka, Russian forces control only 7% of the settlement's total area. In the Zaporizhzhia region, they captured three villages but simultaneously lost 86 square kilometers of territory elsewhere. Furthermore, ISW calculated that Russia's advance has come at a staggering human cost, averaging 83 soldiers killed for every square kilometer gained.
Frontline Developments
In response to the aggression, Ukrainian defense forces successfully repelled the enemy near the settlements of Kalynivske and Ternove in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Meanwhile, Russian forces intensified their offensive in the Donetsk region, making advances in the Pokrovsk and Sviato-Pokrovske areas. These events underscore the continued volatility and intense combat operations across the front.
The ISW's findings highlight the critical need for accurate, independent battlefield monitoring, as false claims can significantly distort perceptions of the conflict both domestically and internationally. The report also demonstrates that Ukrainian forces continue to mount a determined resistance against Russian aggression, despite the immense challenges posed by the ongoing fighting.
