Russian Spy Ring Uncovered in Italy: Military Attaché Paid for Air Defense Secrets Bound for Ukraine.

Heightened Russian Intelligence Activity

According to UATV: Moscow has stepped up its espionage efforts as Western allies continue to supply Ukraine with military aid. Italian authorities recently dismantled a Russian spy network operating in Rome that was attempting to steal classified information about air defense systems destined for Ukraine. The discovery came after investigators tracked suspicious activities linked to Russian operatives in the capital.

Targeting Advanced Air Defense Technology

The spy ring’s primary objective was to gather intelligence on the capabilities of specific air defense systems, including the SAMP/T batteries and a new system developed by Leonardo. Testing for this latest system is scheduled for November 2023. The main suspect in the case is Mikhail Astakhov, a military attaché at the Russian embassy in Italy, who is believed to have ties to Russia’s military intelligence agency.

According to investigators, Astakhov paid a former Italian intelligence officer €4,000 in exchange for confidential documents. Following the exposure of the operation, Italian police arrested Gavino Piras and five other accomplices. In response, Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expelled two military attachés from the Russian embassy in Rome. These actions underscore growing concerns over foreign espionage activities on Italian soil.

This situation highlights the security risks tied to international relations amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The dismantling of the spy network shows that nations supporting Ukraine remain under close surveillance by Russian intelligence agencies. As a result, allied countries may tighten security measures and enhance cooperation to protect sensitive military technologies and information.
