Russia’s Situation: A Statement by Olga Kurnosova

According to UATV: Olga Kurnosova, secretary of the Forum of the Russian Opposition in Support of Ukraine, addressed the state of affairs in Russia on July 12, 2023. She stressed that the elites surrounding Putin must come to terms with the crisis the country now faces. According to her, Russia is suffering severe losses from its war with Ukraine, a conflict now nearing its fifth year. Kurnosova described the current situation as critical, drawing a comparison to the crisis that brought down the Russian Empire in 1917.

During her remarks, she argued that Putin’s inner circle can no longer ignore reality and must recognize the full scope of the crisis.

'Russia is flying into the abyss'
— Kurnosova declared, underscoring the gravity of the moment. She also noted that in Vladimir Putin’s 26 years in power, he has never encountered challenges of this magnitude, pointing to a systemic failure both within the country and his administration.

Kurnosova added that

'of course, the security services have the full volume of real information'
, implying that the authorities are fully aware of the true conditions inside Russia. She also stated that 'the main obstacle to any negotiations is Putin personally,' highlighting the need for a change in leadership to pave the way for peace. In essence, Kurnosova urged a recognition of the crisis gripping Russia and called for the changes necessary to overcome the country’s mounting challenges.

Russia’s Deepening Problems Stemming from the War with Ukraine

Olga Kurnosova’s address sheds light on the deep-rooted issues Russia faces as a result of its war with Ukraine. Her parallel to the 1917 crisis underscores the critical nature of the moment for the Russian regime. Given the ongoing conflict and mounting internal pressures, this situation could destabilize the country’s political landscape, with far-reaching consequences for regional security and international relations. Kurnosova’s statements may serve as a rallying point for opposition forces seeking pathways to change in Russia.
