Italy plans to employ almost half a million foreigners in three years.
The Italian government has announced its intention to issue nearly 500,000 new work visas for immigrants from countries outside the European Union by 2028. This decision has been made due to a labor shortage. Already in 2026, it is planned to open the doors for 164,850 foreign workers, and by 2028, the number of permits issued is expected to reach 497,550.
'The number of visas has been determined based on the needs expressed by social partners and the actual applications for work permits submitted in previous years,' government officials reported.
The agricultural association Coldiretti has expressed support for this decision, calling it key to ensuring workforce in agriculture and the food industry. This is already the second initiative of the government regarding the increase of work visas for foreigners under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The plan to issue new work visas is part of the strategy for the development of legal immigration in Italy and will contribute to addressing economic challenges in the future.
