According to The Sun: Italy is experiencing horrific floods caused by heavy rainfall that has hit the northern part of the country.

Streets and railways have turned into rivers, with people trapped in their cars and homes. Hundreds of schoolchildren had to be rescued from the water.

The worst situation is in the northwest of Italy, where orange alerts were issued for parts of Lombardy and Liguria on Sunday, and strong rains also hit Milan on Monday.

In Meda, Lombardy, powerful water currents moved cars into the streets.

The Seveso River, which flows through Milan, has overflowed, flooding several districts. The Lambro River also threatens to overflow in the city.

Specialized rescue crews were deployed to free about 300 children who were trapped in schools in the Niguarda area.

In Caviate, Como province, rescuers were lifting residents from flooded areas with helicopters after the Taro River overflowed.

They were also checking flooded cars for anyone who might be inside.

Situation in the region

Slides and flooding have caused chaos in the Bormida valley in Liguria. Most schools in the region have had to close.

The water was rising through manholes on the busy Via Vittorini street, where protective structures had been installed to protect homes.

The courthouse in Milan also closed its doors due to flooding, and electricity was turned off.

A mother and her 10-month-old child were rescued from the roof of their car in the province of Monza and Brianza after they were flooded.

In Florence, a pine tree fell on a parked truck, but no one was injured.

The weather forecast promises tough times in the coming days, with potential thunderstorms in central and northern Italy, as well as a drop in temperature.

Heavy rains may also reach the southern regions over the weekend.
