EU's Kaja Kallas: Europe Must Increase Pressure as Russia Stalls Peace Talks

EU Foreign Policy Chief Criticizes Russia's Stance in Peace Negotiations

According to Novyny.live: Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has criticized Russia for deliberately prolonging peace negotiations. Speaking at a press conference in Krakow following a meeting of E5 defense leaders, she urged European nations to intensify pressure on Moscow. Kallas noted that the recent talks in Geneva once again demonstrated Russia's refusal to back down from its maximalist demands. She emphasized that by most metrics, the war has grown even more brutal for Ukraine over the past year.

Stalled Talks and a Struggling Russian Economy

Kallas also pointed out that Russia is stalling negotiations and has taken no symbolic steps toward peace.

"The Kremlin's economy lies in ruins, and the Russian army has barely advanced beyond the 2014 front lines in Ukraine," she stated.
She stressed the necessity of seeing tangible concessions from the Russian side to achieve a sustainable peace. Her comments reflect a broader Western assessment that Russia is using negotiations as a tactic while continuing its military campaign.

Furthermore, Kaja Kallas reported progress on the European Union's 90-billion-euro loan package for Ukraine, with the first funds anticipated in April. "Planning for the EU's contribution to future security guarantees is also ongoing," she added. The press conference took place against the backdrop of recent events, including the Munich Security Conference held on February 15th and a Russian 'Iskander' missile strike on the Lviv region on January 9th.

Kallas's statements underscore serious concerns regarding the current situation in Ukraine and the urgent need for intensified international efforts to secure peace. These remarks highlight the alarming dynamics of a conflict where Russia maintains a rigid position, complicating all pathways to a peaceful settlement. Concurrently, EU support through financial aid represents a crucial factor for Ukraine in continuing its defense and economic recovery. The effectiveness of sustained international pressure on Moscow remains critically important amid the ongoing escalation.
