The number of victims from the earthquake in Myanmar has already exceeded 1,000 people.
According to the military government of Myanmar, on Saturday the number of deaths in the country was 1,002 people, which significantly exceeds the previous data of 144 casualties reported on Friday.
The border city of Thailand reports that at least nine people were killed due to the 7.7 magnitude earthquake as buildings collapsed. Also, 30 people are trapped under the rubble, and 49 are still missing.
Experts from the U.S. Geological Survey predict that the total number of deaths in Myanmar may exceed 10,000, and the economic losses in the country could surpass the annual output.
The leader of Myanmar's junta has turned to the international community for assistance.
«Rescue operations continue in the areas affected by the disaster», the junta stated in a release to local media on Saturday.
According to local media, Chinese rescuers have already arrived in Myanmar's commercial capital, Yangon, which is hundreds of kilometers away from the most affected cities of Mandalay and Naypyidaw.
It is recalled that, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.7 and 6.4 occurred in Myanmar.
