Thailand Emerges as Key Hub in China's Escalating Military Support for Russia.
China's Backing of Russia in the Ukraine War
According to TSN.ua: China significantly increased its support for Russia's war against Ukraine in 2025, a collaboration expected to continue into 2026. Thailand has played a pivotal role in this dynamic, becoming a crucial transit point for goods destined for Russia. This development underscores how the conflict's supply chains are extending across Asia. Notably, Russia imported $125 million worth of drones from Thailand in 2025, accounting for 88% of all Thai drone exports.
This 2025 drone import figure represents an eightfold increase from the previous year, highlighting Russia's growing reliance on Thai technology, particularly for unmanned aerial vehicles. Furthermore, Chinese firms supplied at least $61 million worth of components to Russian companies between 2023 and 2024. A quarter of these supplies went to sanctioned Russian firms linked to the production of Iranian 'Shahed' kamikaze drones.
Geopolitical Consequences and China's Influence
Bolstered by a strategic partnership agreement between Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, the Chinese leader has grown more confident in supporting the Russian president. This cooperation signals China's expanding influence over Russia's military-industrial complex, with serious potential implications for global security. Such support could enhance Russia's military capabilities and strengthen its international standing as the war in Ukraine persists.
"The deepening military collaboration between China and Russia in the context of the Ukraine war marks a new phase in geopolitical relations," analysts state.
This situation may alter the strategic balance regionally and globally, as Russia's enhanced military potential could pose new challenges to international security. Thailand's active involvement in these supply routes also emphasizes the critical role of regional logistics networks in modern warfare.
