Rising Civilian Death Toll Prompts China to Urge Restraint from Ukraine and Russia.
Call for De-escalation
According to UATV: China has called on both Ukraine and Russia to show restraint and resume peace talks, pointing to a surge in civilian casualties. The appeal was delivered by Beijing’s permanent representative, Sun Lei, during a UN Security Council session. He warned that
“the number of civilians killed in hostilities has reached peak levels.”This marks one of Beijing’s strongest public statements on the conflict in recent months.
The remarks came shortly after a visit to Beijing by Alexander Lukashenko, who had spoken with Vladimir Putin before traveling. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signaled his openness to dialogue, stating:
“I am ready to meet with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China to discuss ways to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.”
Humanitarian Toll of the War
China continues to monitor the situation closely and reiterates its call for a peaceful resolution, with a growing emphasis on the war’s humanitarian consequences.
This statement underscores China’s ambition to act as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict and reflects mounting international concern over the humanitarian crisis there. The ongoing engagement between China, Ukraine, and Russia could open new diplomatic avenues, especially given Kyiv’s stated willingness to negotiate. Such developments may shape future bilateral ties and global efforts to resolve the war.
