According to ITC.ua — Техно: One of the biggest challenges in hypersonic and space technologies is finding materials that can endure extreme heat without losing strength. Now, researchers at Xi'an Jiaotong University have created a tantalum-based alloy that retains its mechanical integrity up to 2400°C. The metal's melting point reaches nearly 3000°C, highlighting its potential for high-tech applications. This breakthrough could enable next-generation aerospace vehicles that must survive extreme thermal conditions.

Exceptional Mechanical Performance

Traditional high-performance alloys typically lose strength around 2000°C. In contrast, the new Chinese alloy boasts a tensile strength exceeding 800 MPa at room temperature and can stretch up to 35% before failure. At elevated temperatures between 2000°C and 2400°C, its yield strength measures 200 MPa and 100 MPa, respectively — a notable achievement in materials science. The researchers enhanced the tantalum by adding trace amounts of hafnium boride, which boosted its performance.

Thanks to these unique properties, the alloy can be used to manufacture:

  • components for hypersonic missiles
  • aircraft
  • nozzles
  • rocket combustion chambers
  • thermal protection systems for spacecraft

Additionally, it may find applications in advanced gas turbines and nuclear reactor components. The findings were published in the journal Nature, underscoring their scientific importance and potential industrial impact. This tantalum-based alloy marks a significant step forward in materials science, surpassing existing alloys in temperature resistance and opening new possibilities for high-tech fields.
