The Unintended Consequences of Electronic Jamming on Vehicle Remotes

According to ITC.ua — Техно: Electronic warfare (EW) systems, originally deployed to jam drone signals, are now interfering with car key fobs in both Ukraine and Israel. This interference has become a serious issue for civilian drivers. In December 2023, Israel conducted its first large-scale use of anti-drone jammers, which caused widespread problems for motorists trying to unlock and start their vehicles. Even outside war zones, such jamming can affect everyday driving—for example, in 2013, 20 to 30 cars experienced key fob malfunctions in a Chicago suburb parking lot.

Standard car key fobs in Ukraine and Europe operate at 433 MHz, while American models use 315 MHz. GPS systems, which run at 1575 MHz, are also vulnerable to jamming. A 2023 peer-reviewed study published by IEEE confirmed that the effectiveness of jamming depends on the transmitter's power and its distance from the target. Modern vehicles, equipped with advanced electronics, are more sensitive to EW interference than older models.

Research Findings and Practical Advice

Many drivers wonder whether a key fob can stop working even in peacetime. Based on the evidence, the answer is yes—signal jamming can cause problems far from any conflict. GPS spoofing, another technique, can also mislead navigation systems. To stay safe, drivers should know what to do if their car won’t unlock due to suspected interference: check with a professional or verify the condition of the fob and security systems. Given the growing integration of technology in vehicles, being prepared for signal disruptions is increasingly important.
