Ex-President of Venezuela Maduro to Stand Trial in New York: Details of the Charges

According to ТСН: Former President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro will soon stand trial in New York. After a lengthy detention in one of the most secure federal prisons in the U.S. in Brooklyn, he has been transferred to Lower Manhattan for his first hearing.

According to Bloomberg, the hearing will begin at 12:00 local time (19:00 Kyiv time). The case will be presided over by 92-year-old U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, known for his work on high-profile cases, including those related to the September 11 attacks and major financial crimes.

What Maduro is Accused Of

On Saturday, the U.S. released an indictment in which Maduro is accused of playing a key role in a long-running international scheme to smuggle cocaine into the United States. According to the prosecution, this scheme has been in existence for over 25 years and involves cooperation with transnational criminal organizations, such as the Sinaloa cartel and the Venezuelan group Tren de Aragua, which is designated as a terrorist organization in the U.S.

If found guilty, Maduro faces life imprisonment.

Is Bail Possible and When Will the Full Trial Begin

Experts believe that the possibility of bail in this case is unlikely. During the first hearing, the judge will most likely establish a preliminary schedule for the exchange of evidence and the filing of pretrial motions. According to Bloomberg estimates, the actual trial may not begin until 2027.

It is unclear whether Maduro or his wife, Cilia Flores, have hired private attorneys, as defendants' interests are usually represented by public defenders from the Federal Defender's Office in New York during the early stages of the process.

Conditions of Detention: MDC Prison in Brooklyn

Maduro is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn - the only federal prison in New York. This facility has stringent conditions, where especially dangerous inmates can spend up to 23 hours a day in cells with minimal contact with the outside world.

Experts have pointed out the long-standing criticism of the MDC due to staff shortages, security issues, and difficult living conditions, although the U.S. Bureau of Prisons claims that the situation is gradually improving.

Previously, the MDC has held many high-profile figures in prominent cases, including Ghislaine Maxwell and Sam Bankman-Fried.

It is noted that Nicolas Maduro was detained at his own residence, and Donald Trump shared a photo of the politician aboard the USS Iwo Jima aircraft carrier.

The events surrounding Maduro are attracting attention not only in Ukraine but also around the world, as the former president of Venezuela is one of the most controversial figures on the international stage. The trial could become an important milestone in the fight against international smuggling and influence future relations between the U.S. and Venezuela, as the resolution of this case may alter the political landscape in both countries.
