Gulf States Eye Ukrainian Weapons: What Kyiv Has to Offer.
Rising Demand for Ukrainian Defense Tech
According to UATV: On March 13, Alexey Izhak, head of a department at the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NISD), stated on the FREEДОМ TV channel that Gulf nations are increasingly interested in purchasing Ukrainian technology. However, European allies of Ukraine are not yet ready to buy its weaponry. According to Izhak, the main strengths of Ukraine's experience lie in its digitalization and battle-tested effective armaments. He noted that
“this expertise is becoming sought after”. This growing demand reflects a global shift toward modern, combat-proven defense solutions.
Military Tensions in the Region
Amid these developments, Russia has started launching drones into the territory of NATO and European Union member states, highlighting an escalation in regional military tensions. In response to these challenges, NATO conducted its first major military exercises in the Baltic states, with Ukraine participating. Alexey Izhak observed that NATO
“admitted its unpreparedness”, underscoring the need for adaptation and rapid reaction to emerging threats.
In summary, the Gulf states’ interest in Ukrainian technology, set against the backdrop of Russian military threats and NATO’s efforts to boost force readiness, underscores the value of Ukraine’s defense expertise. This could unlock new international opportunities for Ukraine, particularly in partnering with countries looking to modernize their defense systems for contemporary challenges. At the same time, NATO’s response and its willingness to conduct drills signal an intensification of military strategies amid Europe’s shifting security landscape.
