Russia bans calls in Telegram and WhatsApp: what is known about the restrictions.
The Russian Federation has begun to ban the operation of international messengers such as Telegram and WhatsApp. Initially, Russians were prohibited from making calls in these messengers.
This was by Russian media.
Calls in messengers are banned 'at the request of the people'
The Russian authorities have started to close messengers that are beyond their control.
Thus, Roskomnadzor has partially restricted calls in messengers such as Telegram and WhatsApp.
What excuse did the Russian authorities come up with
Roskomnadzor explained that these messengers are used by fraudsters to deceive people and extort money from them.
Moreover, Roskomnadzor mentioned 'involvement in subversive and terrorist activities of Russian citizens' that occurs through these messengers.
That is why, the Russian authorities stated, calls in Telegram and WhatsApp have been decided to be restricted.
Although independent sources have a different explanation for this step - the desire to force all Russians into a government-created and controlled 'national messenger'.
The Russian Federation has started to limit the ability to make calls in international messengers Telegram and WhatsApp, citing fraud and the threat of terrorism. However, critics claim that this decision is related to the authorities' desire to make citizens use the 'national messenger', which is controlled by the government.
