Zelenskyy Rejects Kremlin's Demand for Moscow Talks, Announces Abu Dhabi Meeting Instead.
Stalemate Over Ukraine-Russia Negotiations
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed the Kremlin's insistence that any talks be held exclusively in Moscow. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Zelenskyy must travel to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy countered that a meeting in Moscow is impossible under current conditions, just as a visit by the Kremlin leader to Kyiv is unfeasible. This impasse reflects the deep-seated tensions and lack of trust that have characterized the conflict since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
New Round of Talks Announced for Neutral Ground
In response, President Zelenskyy has announced a new round of trilateral negotiations, scheduled for February 4th and 5th in Abu Dhabi. This meeting will be the second gathering of security groups concerning Ukraine, underscoring Kyiv's intent to conduct diplomacy on neutral territory. Zelenskyy emphasized that to reach agreements on territorial issues, direct contact at the level of national leaders is ultimately necessary.
The conflicting positions on a venue highlight the complexity of the current situation. Ukraine's push for a neutral location suggests an attempt to find a compromise with Russia, while the Kremlin's demand for a Moscow meeting demonstrates its desire to control the dialogue's framework. This fundamental disagreement casts doubt on the potential for constructive discussions about peace terms and future actions from both sides.
