Current Situation in Crimea

According to UATV: Crimea is experiencing a state of isolation following strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on its logistics network, leading to severe shortages of fuel and electricity. According to Refat Chubarov, head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, the situation is deteriorating, and a major strike on the Kerch Bridge is anticipated. The bridge, already damaged, is no longer operating at full capacity. The Kerch ferry crossing now stands as the last remaining major logistical route into Crimea.

Crimea's Growing Isolation

In an interview with the FREEДОМ television channel on June 21, 2023, Refat Chubarov stated that

“Crimea is entering a phase of isolation.”
He emphasized that
“all major logistical routes into Crimea have been destroyed by Ukraine’s defense forces,”
including the Kerch ferry crossing, which has also been “completely shut down.” Expert assessments indicate that the isolation of Crimea has led to the cancellation of approximately 70% of reservations for July.

Chubarov further noted that “Moscow will try to hold onto Crimea until the very end,” highlighting the ongoing tension in the region. He also remarked that “hundreds of thousands of Russians, unable to travel to other countries, used to vacation in Crimea,” underscoring the peninsula’s importance as a tourist destination.

Given the current circumstances, Crimea faces serious challenges related to logistics and access to resources, which could have far-reaching consequences for the region. The disruption of supply chains is already causing economic strain and worsening social conditions for the local population. Since the Kerch ferry crossing is the last vital link for resource deliveries, any further damage could severely restrict access to essential goods and services.

The importance of Crimea as a tourist hub means that the lack of proper infrastructure is likely to impact visitor numbers, further damaging the local economy.
