Crimean political prisoner Rustem Viratty has died in a Russian prison.


Political prisoner Rustem Viratty has died in a Russian prison, where he was accused of aiding the economic blockade of Crimea and participating in the Crimean Tatar battalion.
He was detained by Russian security forces in 2013 and subjected to torture and beatings. After his sentence, he was sent to a penal colony, where he died. The family is trying to obtain his body.
His brother has gone to retrieve the body. He will be buried in the village of Rykove in the Kherson region. The funeral is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow.
This is not the first death of political prisoners who were in Russian prisons. According to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, 61 political prisoners have died during the occupation of Crimea, many of whom belonged to the Crimean Tatar people.

In addition, Ukrainian political prisoner Andriy Kolomiyets continues to be held in solitary confinement, and Hennadiy Limeshko has been vaccinated against Covid-19 against his will.
