No Resignation: Ukraine's Education Minister Rejects Lawmakers' Calls to Step Down.
Statement from Ukraine's Minister of Education and Science
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine’s Education and Science Minister, Oksen Lisovyi, has made it clear he will not resign, pushing back against demands from members of parliament. He stressed the urgency of reforming the education sector, stating that
“sitting in the minister’s chair is not what matters. What matters is making the changes we need to ensure our war is not in vain, and that we emerge from this conflict into the society we have all dreamed of.”- Oksen Lisovyi.
Government Reshuffle Underway
Lisovyi’s remarks came during a press conference in March 2023, a period of significant turnover within Ukraine’s government leadership:
- Vasyl Malyuk announced his resignation as head of the SBU in January.
- Mykhailo Fedorov and Denys Shmyhal submitted their resignations to the Verkhovna Rada.
- Fedorov and Shmyhal have since taken on new roles as heads of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Energy, respectively.
Against this backdrop of high-level changes, Oksen Lisovyi remains in his post, underscoring the need for continued education reforms.
Ukraine’s political landscape remains fluid, with numerous cabinet shifts that could impact the rollout of educational initiatives. Lisovyi’s decision to stay may signal stability in this sector, a crucial factor amid wartime pressures and the urgent need to adapt the education system to new realities. Advancing these reforms could prove vital for the country’s post-conflict recovery.
