Figure 02 robots completed their operation at BMW: results of an 11-month test

According to Korrespondent.net: Figure AI from California announced the conclusion of its humanoid robots Figure 02, as noted by Interesting Engineering. This occurred after an 11-month pilot project at BMW's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where the robots worked on the production line.

Results of the robots' work

During their operation, the robots helped assemble over 30 thousand BMW X3 cars and loaded more than 90 thousand metal components. The company also released a video showing numerous damages on the robots' bodies, indicating their extended use in challenging production conditions.

Conclusions from Figure AI

Figure emphasized that the signs of wear confirm that the collaboration with BMW was not just an experiment. The F.02 robots successfully operated for almost a year since implementation. After the initial setup, they quickly integrated into the workflow, and by the tenth month of their use, they were already working full shifts.

The main goal of the robots was to extract metal parts from containers and place them on welding fixtures with an accuracy of 5 mm. The entire assembly cycle lasted 84 seconds, of which 37 seconds was loading. The task execution accuracy exceeded 99%.

Issues and new developments

Overall, the F.02 worked over 1250 hours, covering approximately 321 km at the plant, working 10 hours a day from Monday to Friday. The most vulnerable element was the forearm, which had limited capabilities for three degrees of freedom movement and cable routing. This led to wiring and microcontroller issues.

These shortcomings were taken into account in creating the next generation of robots - Figure 03, designed without a distribution board and minimal cabling at the wrist, as motor controllers are now directly connected to the central computer.

The retirement of F.02 marks the company's transition to large-scale implementation. Figure AI representatives noted: 'Figure 02 taught us the first lessons about what is needed for a product to be delivered to customers.' The company is now preparing to deploy the new Figure 03 model, which is considered ready for mass industrial use.

At the same time, it's worth noting global trends in the use of robots in manufacturing and service. This may indicate a future where automation becomes an integral part of industry, opening new opportunities for business and efficiency growth.
