Drone Strike Damages Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant, IAEA Confirms.
Damage Reported at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
According to UATV: Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have identified damage at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) resulting from a drone attack that occurred on May 30. The damage was found on the exterior of the turbine hall building, specifically affecting a metal access hatch located several stories up the structure.
Notably, radiation levels at the site remained normal, as confirmed by the IAEA team. The affected area is situated near reactor unit number 6. This indicates that the attack did not result in critical consequences for the plant's nuclear safety.
“Attacks on nuclear facilities must stop to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident.”
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA
The Importance of International Oversight
The strike on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has raised concerns about the safety of nuclear facilities amid ongoing armed conflicts. While the damage did not lead to elevated radiation levels, it underscores the potential for serious repercussions if attacks on critical infrastructure are not prevented.
IAEA statements highlight the urgent need for international monitoring and cooperation to ensure nuclear security in the region. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by nuclear sites during wartime.
