Elon Musk has introduced a new version of the Grok chatbot
Billionaire Elon Musk unveiled the third generation of the Grok chatbot from xAI. The new version will be available to users with a Premium+ subscription from X starting February 18, 2025.
Previously, Musk announced the release of the new model earlier in February. The billionaire positions it as 'the smartest AI on Earth'. According to him, Grok 3 will surpass all competitors, including OpenAI's GPT-4o and Google's Gemini.
During the presentation, Musk stated that the global goal of xAI and Grok is to answer fundamental questions about the Universe. He also noted that the new version significantly outperforms the previous one.

For training Grok 3, a data center in Memphis with 200,000 graphics processors - Colossus - was used. According to Musk, this is ten times the computational power that was used during the development of Grok 2.
Grok 3 represents a family of models. In particular, during the presentation, the project team announced two such models - Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning.
They are positioned as models that 'think', analogous to o3-mini from OpenAI and R1 from DeepSeek. Their distinguishing feature is the ability to 'refute' facts before outputting them, which allows avoiding some 'traps'.
Moreover, according to the xAI team, both models outperform o3-mini and R1 on several benchmarks.
Notably, some 'reasoning' will be hidden to prevent the use of the distillation method for training other models. Earlier, Microsoft and OpenAI accused the Chinese startup DeepSeek of this.
During the presentation, Grok 3 was asked to develop a flight plan to Mars and back using a simple prompt. It also wrote code for a game that would combine elements of Tetris and 'three in a row'.
Both models will be available in the Grok app. The user can independently activate the Think or Big Brain mode for solving various requests. According to Musk, the latter is more suitable for complex tasks in areas such as mathematics and programming.
The new models will feature a DeepSearch tool. It allows scanning information not only from the Internet but also from the social network X. In the short term, the models will also receive a 'voice mode'.
At the same Time, as Musk noted, the new generation is still being refined:
'We should emphasize that this is a kind of beta version. This means that some shortcomings should initially be expected, but we will quickly improve it, almost daily.' The models are already available to users with a Premium+ subscription from X ($50 per month). Later, xAI will add a SuperGrok pricing plan ($30 per month or $300 per year), which includes an expanded list of features, as well as unlimited image generation.
Once Grok 3 is stable, xAI will release the source code of Grok 2, Musk promised. According to his estimate, this will happen in a few months.
