Strikes on Sumy Oblast on May 31

According to Novyny.live: On May 31, the Russian military launched a drone attack against Ukraine's Sumy region, wounding two elderly men and causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. A 78-year-old retiree along with another senior citizen sustained injuries from the bombardment. In the Krasnopillia community, a 58-year-old man was also hurt.

The assault inflicted severe destruction in the Shostka area, where the following structures were damaged:

  • 17 apartment buildings
  • a pharmacy
  • a bus station
  • shops
  • schools

In the city of Konotop, the attack knocked out both electricity and water supplies, severely disrupting daily life for residents. Notably, Russian forces targeted Ukrainian territory on May 31 with 229 attack drones, including Shahed, 'Gerbera,' 'Italmas,' and decoy models of the 'Parody' type.

Air Defense Response

Air defense units managed to intercept 212 of these aerial threats. However, despite these efforts, a 58-year-old man was killed on the premises of an enterprise in the Koriukivka district during the attack. This tragic event underscores the persistent danger facing residents of the region amid ongoing hostilities. The scale of destruction across communities and the power outages highlight the severity of the situation in Sumy Oblast.

The conditions in Sumy Oblast serve as a stark reminder of the mounting tensions in the area, where civilian facilities continue to come under fire. Damage to infrastructure—including residential buildings and public institutions—greatly complicates life for local inhabitants already suffering from the war's consequences. This incident also reflects the broader pattern of military operations in Ukraine, where public safety remains at risk due to regular bombardments.
