January 20th Russian Strikes Leave Kyiv Without Heating and Water.
Widespread Attacks Across Ukraine on January 20, 2023
According to UATV: On January 20, 2023, Russian forces launched a massive assault across Ukraine, targeting critical energy infrastructure with drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. The strikes, part of a sustained campaign to degrade civilian utilities, caused the most severe damage in the Kyiv, Vinnytsia, and Cherkasy regions. The capital, Kyiv, was left without heating and running water, creating a severe humanitarian crisis for its residents during the winter months.
In Kyiv, one man was wounded, and widespread disruptions to electricity, water, and heating were reported. Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that
"5,635 apartment buildings have been left without heat". He also confirmed that
"the left bank currently has no water supply due to today's attack". Utility and energy crews are working to restore these essential services to the city's inhabitants as a matter of urgency.
Impact on Other Ukrainian Regions
Elsewhere, three people were wounded in the Zaporizhzhia region. Over the past day, Russian occupying forces struck 39 settlements a total of 789 times. These relentless attacks underscore the ongoing escalation of the conflict and the growing threats to civilian populations throughout Ukraine.
This large-scale bombardment highlights the persistent intensity of the war and points to a deliberate Russian strategy of destroying vital civilian infrastructure. Restoring energy and utility services for Kyiv and other affected regions remains a critical priority for authorities and emergency services, especially as winter conditions persist and civilian needs become more acute. The international community continues to monitor these attacks as potential war crimes.
