Odessa Under Heavy Fire: Kindergartens and a Lyceum Damaged in Attack.
Educational Facilities in Odessa Damaged by Intense Shelling
According to Novyny.live: The city of Odessa came under heavy fire on January 27, resulting in damage to educational institutions, including kindergartens and a professional lyceum. Rescue services extinguished fires at the sites, but the destruction has caused significant alarm among the city's residents. This attack is part of a wider pattern of strikes on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine's southern regions.
Damage to Educational Institutions
Among the affected facilities, the Odessa Professional Lyceum of Construction and Architecture sustained substantial damage. During the shelling, over 200 windows, previously destroyed in an earlier attack, were confirmed as lost. Furthermore, at the 'Yasla-Sadok' Kindergarten No. 14, windows were shattered and doors were damaged, underscoring the severity of the assault.
In response to the attack, educational institutions across the Odessa region shifted to remote learning starting January 27 due to the dangerous conditions. Oleg Kiper, head of the Odessa Regional Military Administration, announced the measure, stating that the safety of students and teachers is the priority during such difficult times. This incident highlights the profound challenges educational institutions face amid ongoing hostilities and the critical need to ensure safe learning environments.
This shelling demonstrates the persistent threats to civilian sites in Ukraine, including educational facilities, which continue to suffer severe destruction.
The shift to distance learning is a necessary but disruptive step to protect students during the ongoing conflict. The need to preserve infrastructure and safeguard children remains a pressing concern for local authorities and society as a whole.
