Protests in Indonesia

The President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, cancelled his trip to China due to mass protests that began in the capital, Jakarta, and quickly spread to other cities. According to FREEДOM, citing Reuters, demonstrators are protesting against poverty and social injustice, manifested in low wages for ordinary citizens alongside high incomes for government officials. Inflation in the country is rapidly rising, and taxes are also increasing. Protesters set several local parliament buildings on fire, with at least four confirmed deaths. The protests intensified after a police car struck a motorcyclist-protester, leading to his death.

Cancellation of the Trip

The trip was cancelled on August 30, the day before a scheduled parade in China on September 3, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. These events have become the first serious test for the new government, which has been in power for only a year.

'The president wants to continue to monitor the situation (in Indonesia) directly and seek the best solutions. Therefore, he apologizes to the Chinese government for not being able to accept the invitation,' stated the president's spokesman, Prasetyo Hadi.

According to Hadi, another reason for the cancellation of the trip was the session of the UN General Assembly planned for this September.

The situation in Indonesia underscores the tension between the government and society. The protests have proven to be a serious signal for the government, which is forced to seek ways to address the crises gripping the country. How events will unfold remains to be seen, but for now, the government will focus on internal issues.
