Cuba Plunged into Darkness: Power Plant Failure Triggers Island-Wide Blackout.
What Caused the Cuban Blackout?
According to TSN.ua: A massive power outage has struck Cuba, leaving much of the island, including the capital Havana, without electricity. The blackout was triggered by the sudden failure of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric power plant, located roughly 100 kilometers east of Havana. The loss of power extended from the western province of Pinar del Río to the central-eastern province of Camagüey, while in the eastern province of Las Tunas, electricity was cut due to substation malfunctions.
Repair work on the Guiteras plant is expected to take three to four days. The plant's technical director, Román Pérez, stated that a primary goal of the repairs is to reduce water consumption. The situation is further complicated by longstanding U.S. sanctions, which severely restrict Cuba's access to fuel and spare parts for its aging infrastructure.
Power Outages Are a Recurring Problem for Cuba
Cuba has repeatedly experienced widespread electricity blackouts in recent years. These outages cause significant concern among the population, severely disrupting daily life. As one resident, Ángel Avilés, explained:
“We cannot communicate and we don't know what is happening in the news because we cannot turn on the television.” - Ángel Avilés
Beyond technical failures, Cuba also faces a severe fuel shortage. Mexico may halt oil shipments to Cuba due to U.S. pressure and tariff threats. These factors combine to intensify the ongoing crisis in the country's energy sector.
The Impact of U.S. Policy on Cuba's Energy Crisis
U.S. sanctions continue to have a profound negative impact on Cuba's economy, particularly its energy infrastructure. As expert Arian Mendoza noted:
“The fact that the National Electroenergetic System (SEN) shuts down completely should not be considered normal.” - Arian Mendoza
This situation is causing alarm both among the public and energy specialists. The island's power grid is notoriously fragile, and this latest blackout underscores systemic vulnerabilities.
The extensive blackout highlights Cuba's persistent energy problems, which have been significantly worsened by sanctions and fuel scarcity. This latest power failure is just one example of the systemic difficulties facing the country. With limited access to resources and technology, the Cuban population continues to suffer the consequences of an energy crisis that demands urgent solutions from both the government and the international community.
