IAEA to send inspection team to Chernobyl nuclear facility after Russian attack
According to Novyny.live: The International Atomic Energy Agency has been alerted by Ukraine to a drone strike carried out by Russian forces on the Central Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The attack, which occurred during the night of June 7, caused significant damage to the fuel reception building. While the resulting fire was extinguished and radiation levels at the site remain within normal limits, the incident has raised serious concerns. No casualties were reported.
The IAEA has confirmed its intention to dispatch inspectors to the Chernobyl nuclear site to assess the aftermath of the strike.
“An IAEA team already stationed at the Chernobyl site will soon visit the facility to verify the impact of the attack,” the agency stated.IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized that
“strikes on such facilities are unacceptable and violate the core principles of nuclear safety during armed conflicts.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that “Russia deliberately attacked the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility near the Chornobyl NPP,” highlighting the severity of the situation and the potential risks to nuclear security amid ongoing hostilities. Energoatom, Ukraine’s state nuclear energy company, released photographs of the damaged fuel storage building, confirming the seriousness of the incident.
