Merz on the confiscation of Russian assets: this is a signal to Moscow to end the war.
Confiscation of Russian assets and their impact on the end of the war
According to ТСН: The confiscation of frozen assets of the Russian Federation for the purpose of using them to provide Ukraine with reparations loan should serve as a bright signal to Moscow about the need to stop aggression.
This opinion was expressed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a business forum in Germany. He emphasized that this decision aims for the end of the war, not its continuation.
“This is a signal to Moscow that there is no point in continuing this war,” emphasized Friedrich Merz.
The Chancellor also warned EU member states against the undesirability of reaching an agreement on the reparations loan for Ukraine. He believes that a lack of consensus could seriously harm the EU's reputation.
“We have made efforts to create unity in the EU Council so that all European countries share an equal risk. But if we fail— the EU's capacity will be severely damaged for years to come,” added Friedrich Merz.
Recently, the European Union made the decision to indefinitely freeze sovereign Russian assets. This decision received a positive assessment from the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, who noted its political significance.
It should be reminded that earlier Vladimir Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine relies on funding obtained from frozen Russian assets, as without this money the country “will not be able” to function.
These events indicate the strengthening of international support for Ukraine in the context of the war with Russia. The decision on the confiscation of assets and calls for unity in the EU demonstrate the intentions of Western partners to help Ukraine restore its economy after the war. Such steps can significantly influence the further development of the situation in the region and contribute to the resolution of the conflict.
