Cyber threats in Hong Kong have sharply increased: data fraud, phishing, and malware have become the most common attacks, reports the South China Morning Post.

According to research by antivirus company Norton, 49% of Hong Kong residents have fallen victim to online threats in the past 12 months.

34% of respondents experienced fraud, and 28% became victims of phishing and malware, leading to financial losses and loss of Time.

Financial losses from online fraud increased by 37% in the first five months of this year.

One of the most notable cases involved the theft of 258 million Hong Kong dollars by fraudsters posing as law enforcement officials.

The Hong Kong authorities have asked banks and payment system operators to expand anti-fraud alerts and plan to launch special notifications on ATMs.

Cybersecurity experts note the vulnerability of local companies and a 44.5% increase in botnet attacks.

The Hong Kong government plans to pass a bill aimed at strengthening cybersecurity for critical infrastructure and imposing fines on operators for inadequate protection.
