Microsoft has announced that the Skype service for calls and messaging will be shut down in May 2025. Instead, users are encouraged to switch to Microsoft Teams.

The latest version of Skype for Windows contains a message indicating that it will no longer be available from May and urges users to continue calls and messaging on Teams.

Skype was launched in 2003 and for a long Time remained the most popular messaging service. In 2011, Skype was acquired by Microsoft, which updated it and integrated it into its products.

In 2017, Microsoft released the Teams platform for collaboration, based on Skype technologies and competing with Slack. Since then, the company has continued to develop Teams and in 2019 ceased support for Skype for Business.

It is worth noting that Microsoft has increased the subscription price for its cloud package Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). The price of the family subscription to Microsoft 365 has risen by 30%, to $130 per year, while the version for individual users has increased by 43% to $100.

It has also been reported that Microsoft is in negotiations to acquire the Chinese platform TikTok, as stated by US President Donald Trump.
