Spanish Minister of Defense's plane suffers GPS attack near Kaliningrad: details of the incident.
Incident involving the Spanish Air Force plane
According to The Sun: A plane of the Spanish Air Force, carrying the country's minister of defense, experienced a GPS system failure during flight near the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. This information was confirmed by Spanish officials.
The incident raised concerns about the safety of military flights in the region amid rising tensions.
GettyOn board the plane was Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles, who was scheduled for a bilateral meeting with her Lithuanian counterpart, Dovilė Šakalienė, during her visit to Šiauliai military base.
The plane also transported relatives of Spanish soldiers participating in a new NATO air defense mission in Eastern Europe.
Circumstances and consequences of the incident
According to the Ministry of Defense, the plane was heading over Russian Kaliningrad towards Lithuania.
The mission was initiated earlier this month after an incident when Poland intercepted drones that breached its airspace.
68-year-old Margarita Robles has been the Minister of Defense of Spain since 2018. In June, she stated that Spain is "absolutely committed" to NATO and the European Union.
Recently, the Spanish contingent intercepted eight Russian planes flying over the Baltic Sea.
The commander onboard the Spanish plane noted that such incidents are common during flights near Kaliningrad, affecting both civilian and military aircraft.
"We can also use military satellites for navigation," the commander added.
This incident occurred after Spain abandoned plans to purchase American F-35 fighters and decided to direct its defense budget towards European-made planes.
The Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom emphasized that the country is "ready to act," highlighting the risks associated with Russian aircraft in case of violations of European airspace.
"The security of Ukraine is our security, and we all depend on the support of the UN Charter," she noted.
